Laughter Therapy

Last Saturday night, my dear friend, Kelly (far right), organized a dinner out with some friends.   Many of them are genetic counselors that I�ve known for years.      I was hesitant to go out that night because it was only the second day after starting my new oral chemotherapy and I had spent most of that day fighting off nausea and vomiting.   At the restaurant, I still felt like crap.   Although it was great too see everyone as they arrived and the placed smelled amazing, I knew that I couldn�t order any food. Then something magical happened.   As my friends and I talked and laughed, I realized that I was feeling less crappy.   We talked and laughed some more, and I decided to order a side of rice.   The more we talked and laughed, the hungrier I got.   I ordered an entr�e! I had a wonderful night catching up with everyone and am reminded how therapeutic laughter is. Thank you to everyone who came, and to those who weren�t able...

Glancing Back While Moving Forward

           A year ago I wrote a blog entitled, "Decreasing Urgency."  At that time, it had been about a year and half from when I was diagnosed with advanced cancer, and because my medication was controlling my disease well, I was able to feel some relief, and hope.  I realized that I was moving away from my initial sense of panic, that was driving me to try to get things done quickly...before I lost my chance.  I wanted my children, both in their twenties, to "ripen" before I died.  I was secure that I had mothered them as best as I could, but there were a few things I still needed to tweak.  I needed to get my house in order - organizing my belongings and getting rid of unused "stuff" that had quietly, and insidiously, accumulated in our basement. CT Scans #4, Update

For the last few years, I have been on a low dose blood pressure lowering medication.  My dad had high blood pressure, so I wasn't surprised when I, too, was diagnosed.  Monitoring blood pressure is simple.  Whenever I think about it, I use the home BP monitoring device I bought at Walgreens which precisely measures my BP and heart rate. I write down the results on a table my internist gave me and once a year, he looks at it and makes dosing adjustments, if necessary.  Unlike BP medications, it's not possible to know if chemotherapeutic agents are working without periodic imaging studies, such as CT scans, which can't be done at home. I go to the hospital and from the time I check-in until I walk out, it's a 2-hour appointment.  I start getting nervous a few days before the tests until I hear the results. The way it works is that we cancer patients dutifully get chemotherapy, either by IV infusion or, as in my case, orally for several weeks or a few months. ...
